Gasoline Engine Oil Package Additive: SP and GF-6

A gasoline engine oil package additive is the pre-blended performance chemistry in passenger car motor oil (PCMO) that protects turbocharged gasoline direct injection (TGDI) engines against low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI), timing chain wear, deposits, and oxidation while delivering the fuel economy that ILSAC GF-6 and API SP demand. Gasoline engine oils are formulated against the most demanding consumer-engine specifications ever written: API SP (introduced May 2020) and ILSAC GF-6 added tests for LSPI — a failure mode that can punch a hole through a piston — and for timing chain wear, alongside tightened deposit and fuel economy requirements. Every one of those tests is won or lost in the additive package, which is why selecting the right gasoline engine oil package additive is the critical decision for any PCMO blender.

The Modern Gasoline Engine: Why Additive Chemistry Changed

TGDI engines dominate the market: small displacement, turbocharged, direct-injected, and tuned for maximum fuel economy. They create conditions older SN oils were never designed for:

  • Low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) — at low RPM and high load, fuel droplets and oil droplets in the cylinder can ignite prematurely, creating pressure spikes that crack or destroy pistons. Calcium-based detergents were implicated in LSPI; the solution came from reformulating detergents and adding molybdenum-based friction modifiers.
  • Timing chain wear — direct injection and stop-start operation increase chain loading; GF-6 introduced a dedicated chain wear test that old oils fail.
  • Oil dilution — fuel washing past the rings dilutes the oil, demanding stronger antioxidant and antiwear protection.
  • Longer drains — OEM intervals of 10,000–16,000 km demand oxidation stability that older packages cannot deliver.

What an API SP / GF-6 Package Contains

Detergents — Reformulated for LSPI

Overbased calcium and magnesium sulfonates remain the cleaning workhorses, but their ratios are tuned: reduced calcium and increased magnesium, or the use of salicylate detergents, lowers LSPI propensity while keeping piston cleanliness. This reformulation is the single most visible change from SN-era chemistry.

Friction Modifiers — Fuel Economy and LSPI Control

Molybdenum compounds (MoDTC, MoDTP) and organic friction modifiers reduce engine friction for the GF-6 fuel economy tests — and molybdenum in particular helps suppress LSPI. The package balances friction modifier type and level against wear protection and LSPI performance.

Antiwear — ZDDP, Rebalanced

Phosphorus is capped in GF-6 (0.08% max) to protect catalysts, so ZDDP levels are limited and supplemented with ashless antiwear and the molybdenum system. Chain wear protection requires the antiwear film to persist under boundary conditions — a subtle formulation balance.

Dispersants and Antioxidants

High dispersancy keeps sludge and soot suspended; aminic/phenolic antioxidant combinations protect against oxidation, viscosity increase, and acid formation over long drains. Detergents plus dispersants still form the largest fraction of the package.

API SP vs. GF-6: Know the Difference

  • API SP — the base gasoline category: LSPI, chain wear, high-temperature deposits, plus all earlier requirements. Backward compatible.
  • ILSAC GF-6A — API SP performance plus fuel economy tests, primarily for 0W-20 and 5W-20 grades (also 0W-16).
  • ILSAC GF-6B — exclusively 0W-16, with stricter low-viscosity and economy requirements; not backward compatible.

A package may cover SP and GF-6A together, but GF-6B 0W-16 usually needs dedicated tuning. If you blend for the North American or Japanese market, GF-6 is the requirement; for Europe, ACEA sequences (often with OEM approvals like VW 508/509 or MB 229.7x) apply — different packages again.

Formulating a Gasoline Engine Oil: Practical Steps

  1. Choose the package by target spec — API SP only, GF-6A, GF-6B, or ACEA. Ask for the supplier's test history, including LSPI and chain wear results.
  2. Select base oil — Group III or PAO for 0W-20 and lower; Group II for economy 5W-30/10W-30. Low Noack volatility matters for oil consumption.
  3. Set the treat rate — typically 9–13% for SP/GF-6; follow the supplier's reference formulation.
  4. Add shear-stable viscosity modifier — the VM must hold the grade in the Sequence VIII and shear tests.
  5. Verify — kinematic viscosity, CCS, MRV, Noack, TBN, and elemental analysis; then bench tests (four-ball wear, oxidation) before any licensed sequence testing.
