Sodium isoamyl xanthate (SIAX) is a strong, long-chain xanthate collector designed for ores that resist standard short-chain collectors. Its five-carbon isoamyl chain gives it the strongest collecting power of the commercial sodium xanthate series, which makes it particularly effective on oxidized minerals, refractory copper ores and auriferous pyrite.
Chemistry and Specification
Sodium isoamyl xanthate has the formula (CH3)2CHCH2CH2OCSSNa and is produced from isoamyl alcohol, carbon disulfide and caustic soda. It appears as a yellowish powder with a pungent odour, soluble in water. The product conforms to standard YS/T 487-2005 with an active content of at least 76.0% and free alkali of 0.5%. Full specification details are available on the sodium isoamyl xanthate product page of Shanghai Minglan Chemical.
Where SIAX Delivers Its Best Results
- Oxidized copper and lead ores: the strong collecting action of SIAX helps float partially oxidized minerals such as malachite and cerussite, often in combination with sulfidization using sodium sulfide.
- Refractory copper sulfide: where chalcopyrite is finely disseminated, the longer chain improves collection kinetics and recovery.
- Auriferous pyrite and gold ores: SIAX is a well-established collector for pyrite-hosted gold, delivering higher gold recovery than shorter-chain xanthates in many circuits.
- Massive sulfide and complex ores: when head grades are low and recovery is the priority, SIAX outperforms butyl and ethyl xanthate per unit of reagent.
Dosage and Practical Tips
Typical SIAX dosage ranges from 30 to 120 g/t. Because of its strong collecting power, over-dosing can reduce selectivity, so stage addition and close pulp chemistry control are recommended. Combine SIAX with a frother such as MIBC and adjust pH with lime to stabilise the froth phase.
