ZDDP in Engine Oil: The Role of Zinc Dialkyl Dithiophosphate as an Antiwear Additive

ZDDP (zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate) is the most important antiwear additive in engine oil. For more than 70 years it has protected valve trains, cams and bearings by forming a sacrificial antiwear film on metal surfaces – and it also acts as an antioxidant and corrosion inhibitor. What Is ZDDP?

ZDDP is an organophosphorus compound produced from alcohols, phosphorus pentasulfide and zinc oxide. The most common commercial grades from Shanghai Minglan Chemical:

How ZDDP Works in Engine Oil

  • Antiwear: under boundary lubrication, ZDDP decomposes at hot contact points and forms a zinc polyphosphate film that prevents metal-to-metal contact.
  • Antioxidant: ZDDP decomposes hydroperoxides, slowing oil oxidation and viscosity increase at high temperatures.
  • Corrosion protection: it passivates bearing surfaces against attack by acidic combustion products.

The Phosphorus Debate: ZDDP and Aftertreatment

Phosphorus from ZDDP can poison catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters. Modern API SP and CK-4 oils therefore limit phosphorus to 0.06-0.08% by using lower treat rates, secondary ZDDP with better thermal stability, or ashless antiwear supplements. Formulators now balance wear protection against catalyst life – a trade-off that makes ZDDP grade selection an engineering decision, not a commodity purchase.

Buying ZDDP: What to Verify

  1. Confirm sulfur, phosphorus and zinc content against your specification.
  2. Check the thermal stability and hydrolysis resistance of the grade (secondary types are more stable).
  3. Verify compatibility with your detergent and dispersant system.
  4. Request a COA for each batch from the manufacturer.
