Ammonium Dibutyl Dithiophosphate (Dithiophosphate BA): A Collector and Frother for Nonferrous Ores

Ammonium dibutyl dithiophosphate – known in the industry as Dithiophosphate BA or “ding-an hei yao” – is a dual-function flotation reagent that acts as both a collector and a frother. It is particularly effective for silver, copper, lead and activated zinc sulfide minerals, and is a valuable addition to circuits that need strong collection without sacrificing froth control.

Chemistry and Specification

The major component is ammonium dibutyl dithiophosphate with the molecular formula (C4H9O)2PSSNH4. It appears as a white to pale grey powder, odourless, deliquescent in air, soluble in water and chemically stable. The product conforms to standard YS/T 278-2011:

Item Specification
Ammonium dibutyl dithiophosphate ≥ 95.0% (Superior Grade)
Insoluble matter in water ≤ 0.5%

Full details are on the ammonium dibutyl dithiophosphate product page.

How It Behaves in the Flotation Circuit

As a collector, the dibutyl dithiophosphate group adsorbs strongly on silver, copper and lead sulfide surfaces, and on activated zinc sulfide. Because the reagent also froths, it can partially replace separate frother addition in some circuits, simplifying reagent handling. Its combined collector-frother action is especially valued in:

  • Silver-bearing ores: excellent collector for native silver and silver sulfides, often blended with xanthate.
  • Copper and lead circuits: improves recovery of coarse and middling particles.
  • Complex sulfide ores: synergises with xanthate collectors for higher overall recovery.

Dosage and Handling

Typical dosage is 20-100 g/t depending on the circuit, added as a 5-10% solution. Because the powder is deliquescent, store in sealed containers and protect from humidity. Prepare solutions fresh before use.
