Flotation Reagents: A Complete Guide to Collectors, Frothers and Regulators

Flotation reagent selection is the heart of froth flotation, the process that recovers copper, lead, zinc, gold, silver, nickel and rare earth minerals from their ores. Every reagent class plays a specific role: collectors make minerals hydrophobic, frothers stabilise the bubble-mineral interface, and regulators control pulp chemistry. This guide gives a complete overview for operators and buyers.

The Three Flotation Reagent Families

Collectors

Collectors adsorb onto mineral surfaces and render them hydrophobic so air bubbles can carry them to the froth. The main commercial types are:

Frothers

Frothers create a stable but manageable froth that carries mineral-laden bubbles. MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) is the industry standard; 2# frother (pine-oil type) is a lower-cost alternative for many circuits.

Regulators and Depressants

Regulators control pH and selectively depress unwanted minerals:

  • Copper sulfate pentahydrate: activator for sphalerite in zinc circuits.
  • Sodium hydrosulfide: depressant of copper minerals in molybdenum circuits, and sulfidizing agent for oxidized ores.
  • Sodium sulfide, sodium sulfite, zinc sulfate, lead nitrate and sodium metabisulfite: pH and redox control, and selective depression.

Building a Flotation Reagent Regime

  1. Define the target minerals and their liberation characteristics from a mineralogy study.
  2. Select collector by selectivity and strength needed; add frother at 10-60 g/t to tune froth stability.
  3. Set pulp pH with lime or soda ash; adjust redox with sulfite or metabisulfite if required.
  4. Use stage addition of collector for better control of recovery vs grade.
  5. Optimise via laboratory tests, then locked-cycle tests, then plant trials.

Why Reagent Quality Controls Recovery

Off-spec reagents introduce variability that operators cannot fully compensate for. Working with a flotation reagent manufacturer that issues batch certificates, holds tight specifications and provides application support reduces process risk. Minglan Chemical supplies the complete reagent suite – collectors, frothers and regulators – from one source, simplifying procurement and quality control.
