How MIBC Works as a Frother
Frothers lower the surface tension at the air-water interface, stabilising the air bubbles that carry hydrophobic mineral particles to the concentrate launder. MIBC produces a froth that is stable enough to carry minerals but brittle enough to break down in the launders – this “medium froth” character is why MIBC suits most sulfide circuits. Its advantages include:
- High selectivity: MIBC does not collect minerals, only stabilises bubbles, so it does not interfere with collector chemistry.
- Low dosage: typically 10-60 g/t.
- Clean handling: low toxicity relative to older pine-oil frothers, and a mild odour.

MIBC vs 2# Frother
2# frother (pine-oil type) is cheaper but produces a more persistent, less selective froth and has a stronger odour. For high-grade concentrate requirements and clean operation, MIBC is preferred; for bulk low-grade circuits, 2# frother can lower reagent cost. Many plants blend the two to balance cost and froth quality.
